Chris Lacy blazed past two portable bleachers full of NFL scouts — and Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin — before slowing on the turf inside Oklahoma State’s Sherman Smith Center practice facility.

He turned around, jogging back toward the south end of the room

, when Marcell Ateman provided his fellow wide receiver with some valuable information.

Holding a stopwatch, Ateman clocked Lacy’s 40 yard dash at 4.38 seconds.

“I’m done!” Lacy shouted, satisfied.

While the main attraction at OSU’s pro day Thursday was quarterback Mason Rudolph

, it was Lacy who continued to force opponents to take notice. The 6 foot 3, 204 pound receiver clocked a much improved 40 time from the 4.53 he ran at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

The 40 time published by OSU on Thursday afternoon was 4.43 seconds.

“That was the goal, to run a faster 40 out here,” Lacy said. “Caught the ball clean going through my routes.”

NFL personnel from all 32 teams showed up in Stillwater on Thursday. In addition to Tomlin, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was in attendance. Former OSU offensive coordinator Todd Monken — now the coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — and New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Shula also were present.

Many eyes were there for Rudolph, who unofficially completed 57 of 63 passes with two drops during his throwing session.

But Lacy’s stock has continued to rise since his final game for OSU in December.

The DeSoto

, Texas, native was largely forgotten about as a senior, finishing sixth on the Cowboys with 20 receptions. Fellow seniors James Washington and Ateman garnered most of the targets and took up most of the conversation when it came to the NFL draft.

But as Lacy walked to class one day, he checked his email to make sure no classes were canceled.

He saw an invitation to the NFL combine and lit up.

“I don’t even remember what we talked about in class that day,” said Lacy, who is on track to get his degree in industrial engineering May 12.

If Lacy is drafted on the weekend of April 27 29, it will make for a fantastic story. A kid who grinded for four years largely under the radar, catching 63 total passes, could land an NFL job and a diploma in the span of two weeks.

His performance Thursday, which included a 35.5 inch vertical, helped his cause.

“He’s a great student, he’s a great guy, and once you just give him the opportunity just to show what you can do, that’s all you need,” Ateman said.

Rudolph happy with performance
It was an all too familiar scene Rudolph walked off the practice field toward a throng of cameras, prepared to answer questions in front of an OSU backdrop.

The quarterback’s journey has taken him from California to Indianapolis and back to Oklahoma over the past two months. He spent Thursday working off a script from his quarterback coach, former OSU quarterback Zac Robinson, and letting loose his signature deep passes to his favorite targets.

After his throwing session, Rudolph met at midfield with Tomlin and Colbert of the Steelers.

He said he has four private workouts and two team visits scheduled in the next few weeks, but he declined to reveal which teams are interested.

Rudolph said he is still undecided as to where he’ll watch the draft — either in Arlington, Texas, at AT T Stadium or back home in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

“I think Mama Rudolph may be the one that’s going to make that decision,” he said. “She kind of wants to have a party at the house, but we’ll see what happens.”

This and that

, a defensive tackle, lifted 37 reps at 225 pounds on the bench press. A 6 foot 1, 345 pound prospect, Hughes had one tackle in his OSU career.

During the portion of pro day that took place in the weight room, the loudest oohs and aahs came when Washington stepped up for his vertical. He leapt 39 inches — a number that would have ranked third among receivers at the combine.

Williams, an offensive lineman, participated even though he might have the option to return to school. After missing most of a second consecutive season with an ankle injury, Williams is hoping for an additional season of eligibility.
